Annual Charlie La Roue Memorial Race Monday September 2, 2019
This race is conducted annually in memory of Charlie who was one of the most successful sailboat racers that Tiverton Yacht Club ever produced. The race is conceived as a family oriented “fun race” (non-spinnaker) aimed at maximizing the participation of club members many of which have sailboats and never race them.
Sailors who race with us on Wednesday night from the Spar Island Racing Association are also invited. This year’s race is scheduled for Labor Day (September 2) afternoon (2:00PM start) to coincide with other activities at the club. The race has been planned and scheduled such that racers will have a fair tide racing back, in particular under the Sakonnet River Bridge. Bring your makings for a Barbeque dinner at the club after the race. Grills will be provided.
The race will start Between R-4 and the committee boat, East of Common Fence Point and Finish in front of the TYC dock. This year there will be two classes split by Performance Handicap Ratings. Faster boats will be given a 7-10 mile course and slower boats will be given a 5-7 mile course. Both classes will finish in front of the TYC dock.
To make the race fair to all participants, regardless of size or design, we will handicap all racers using the Narragansett Bay Performance Handicap Rating Factor. Racers should indicate their PHRF rating if known. Ratings assigned several years back will be accepted provided there have been no major changes to the boat. For boats that have no PHRF rating, the committee will assign one based on comparable boats.
