Halloween Party 2016

Welcome to the Tiverton Yacht Club.  We are a small family oriented yacht club on the Sakonnet River in Tiverton, Rhode Island.  If you have a love for the water, for boats and for down to earth friendly people, you have found the right place.

Inclement weather did not deter the faithful TYC members from attending the Annual Meeting held at the club last night. Over fifty guests were treated to a dessert buffet which also featured large fresh strawberries and a basket of red grapes. Beer and wine were available at the bar set up on the southern part of the room.

Lori Boivin was chair and was assisted by Pat and Dave Collins.

Commodore Phyllis Ibbotson welcomed the guests and gave an overview summary of the highlights of this past summer. She focused on the successful sail training program under the direction of Meredith Collins and Mike Mills and the Thursday Night Pot Luck dinners which attracted over 150 members and guests each week during the summer. Recognition was given to Lori Boivin, the social chair, who organized the events.

And the good financial news came from Treasurer Brendan McNally who stated that in the ten years that he's been treasurer, this was the best year for collecting revenue on time and that the surplus of over $30,000 will be used for capital improvements for next season.

Brendan noted humorously that instead of having thousands in collectibles he only had $23 in uncollected funds. At this time, Greg Jones, raised his hand and said that he'll pay up! We really don't thing Greg was the debtor but he did add levity to the evening.

Joanne Reuther was recognized for her monthly work as club secretary. She also noted that she is in charge of the TYC Store. Please email her if you wish to purchase TYC merchandise for anyone on your Christmas List.

Each of the seven directors present gave summaries of their activities during the summer. Highlights included the following. Lori Boivin received a warm round of applause for her summer socials and the announcement of two upcoming events: The Halloween Party on Friday, October 26 and the Turkey Trot on Saturday, November 17. Craig Rachupka, Membership chair, noted that there are 33 on the waiting list. Mike Mills said that 96 youngsters were in the sail training program this year and also that he is stepping down as chair of that committee. He will be succeeded by Teresa O'Connor.

When it was time for the house report Greg Jones, chair, took to the floor. After telling all the good things that were happening to the club house including the updated camera security system and the card key access doors, he paused to make a special announcement. He has purchased a windup key for the nautical clock that hangs at the entrance to the kitchen. He deadpanned.  We love Greg and his sense of humor which enlivens so many of our monthly board meetings. Greg has devoted countless hours to the club as a past Commodore and assisted in the plans for this building.  Thank you, Greg, for your continued support and love of our club.

My junior report was the last of the director's report for the night. I noted the success of the weekly pool and golfing games that were held during the Thursday social. I thanked my new weekly assistant, Callie Moran, who also obtained important information which I used for my weekly written email reports. I also gave special thanks to Jenn Escher, who sends out my weekly stories, Charlie Page, Boggie Ozimek, Phyllis and Teresa O'Connor who supervised the exciting greased watermelon contest on Labor Day. To borrow Brendan's phrase, the Labor Day activities were the best in the past ten years also.

The last order of business was the election of directors for the next three years. There are 17 directors of the TYC. This includes five officers who are chosen by the directors at the first board meeting in November. The board meets on the second Tuesday of the month at the 6:30 pm. All TYC members are cordially welcomed to attend.

The new board members elected tonight for a three-year term are as follows: Lori Boivin, Brendan McNally, Gregg Morash, Teresa O'Connor and Joanne Reuther.

Richard Chew did not seek renewal of a three-year term. He is succeeded by Teresa O'Connor.

In her closing remarks, Commodore Ibbotson complimented Richard on his many years of club service especially his work as a member of the "Pool Boys" who prepared the pool for summer usage. Mr. Chew was the recipient of a gift from the Commodore. Phyllis also thanked many of the board who performed various unsung duties at the club.

It was once again my pleasure to MC the annual meeting. Thanks to the short reports of the directors, I was able to complete the meeting in less than an hour. It was 8:55 pm when I smiled and banged the gavel to end the meeting.

That, however, does not mean the TYC is closed for the year. The enthusiasm of the directors will allow them to reach out to the members to seek their input, advice and ideas for the coming summer season. We welcome all members to become involved in a club committee. Please take the time over the winter months to look over the Log Book, reread some of the stories and email your help to a chairman. I always welcome help for our weekly pool games, talent show and teenage dances. Hope to hear from you on a cold night in January!

In the meantime, the Halloween Party is on October 26. See you there!

Regards, Jim Rogers
